You've Got Kayl

We all have our own body insecurities. One (of several) are my hands: Too long, lanky, scrawny fingers that are completely disproportional to the rest of my body (i.e. short). They remind me of spider webs.

    Awk Hands Exhibit 3

    Awk Hands Exhibit 4
    Awk Hands Exhibit 5
Before when I looked in the mirror, I saw everything wrong with myself--and it wasn't just the physical side. I judged who I was; I criticized myself for not being who I wasn't. My list definitely could have gone on past my hands but I'm trying not to do that anymore. And when I catch myself doing so, I like to change my perspective and put a positive spin on it instead. I'm not saying to never feel insecure about them. But to credit your insecurities for the good things too rather than always focusing on what you dislike.

    When beets attack

Blood, sweat and a buttload of patience went into making this

Throughout high school, I was mocked for always talking with my hands (see Exhibit 3 above). I hated it. Now, I still talk with my hands and use them to express myself but my outlook has changed. I started to list all the little things that my awkward (and unforgettable!) hands have allowed me to do, things I typically take for granted. Somehow I ended up writing a poem....? So here's my attempt at being poetic:

    A Note To My Hands
    These hands
that let me type these words
key by key by key by--
that held on to my mama when I was in the doctor's office, terrified of getting a shot
that allow me to lose all the thumb wrestling wars
that someday will have a ring around it that perfectly fits
that let me scratch my back just now
    that turned pages upon pages
    that knead and need

without you I wouldn't have been able to reach a key over an octave on the piano
I wouldn't have these totally paintable fingernails
I wouldn't have crocheted scarves or planted potatoes or built sandcastles
I wouldn't have touched my toes in yoga
I wouldn't have crossed my fingers wishing wanting waiting...

    These hands
    that let me be
without you I wouldn't be me

    Questions:
What body part do you dislike and why are you thankful for it?
    Name your favorite polish color!!
Which Oscar nominated movies have you seen/are rooting for? (Completely unrelated buuuut I'm watching the Academy Awards right now sooo)

    1. As an introvert, it takes me a while to open up to people. I like deep conversations. When I first meet you, I want to know all about your life--how did you get to where you are, what's on your bucket list, your favorite movie, food, color, book, people and why are they your favorites--but I'm terrified to ask. I keep it all in my head because people want to build up to those questions. What if I am TIRED OF SMALL TALK??? It is exhausting. The author poses are interesting take on relationships, if we skipped the small talk and started off with big talk instead.

    2. You know you have an HGTV addiction when this makes too much sense.... As a side note: I totally wanted to be an interior designer up until sophomore year of high school. Then I realized I could not draw to save my life.

    3. Click here if you're having a blah day. I started to accumulate my own personal "Happy List" on the back of my planner. Included on it are fuzzy, wuzzy socks, TGIF-Thursdays & long hugs where you practically inhale the person. I love a good reminder to think positively and be grateful for the little things we take for granted. Life could always be so, so much worse.

    4. Loved this little article about living your own life. We strive so hard to be what we think people want us to be. In reality, all others want of us is our genuine, true human selves--insecurities, desires, capabilities, and all.
What was missing in my life wasn’t another promotion, a higher salary, or a more perfect man. What was missing was me.
When I read ^^^ that quote, it struck a cord. Last year, I felt empty. But I felt I didn't deserve to feel that way given my put-together life: excellent grades, a supportive family, a bright, well-defined future, a skinny figure; I kept blaming myself for not feeling happy. There had to be something wrong with me. It took me a while to see that because I was chasing so many so-called ideals I was losing who I was. I was chasing these ideals because I didn't think who I was was a likeable person. If you aren't content with you and grateful for the world around you, I don't think you can ever be truly and undoubtedly happy.

    5. This week's list could not be complete without mentioning some sort of National Eating Disorder Awareness month post. I've read a lot of amazing things over the past week. A couple that stood out to me that I would like to share are Julia's and Miss Polkadot's. The former: a motivational read on becoming a story of hope through her recovery. The latter: a PSA to not give into the notion of needing to exercise to eat. Two awesome & inspiring reads from two really awe-inspiring blogs/people!

Sending you all love this weekend! Go out, smell the roses, bask in the last couple of days of February, learn something new about yourself, make a stranger's day, eat good food & pass on the love.

    Questions:
If you watch (too much) HGTV like I do, what's your favorite show? I love Fixer Upper (Texas pride!!!) & House Hunters!
    What's on your happy list?
Any must-reads on your end this week?

    1.  Though I'm so so SO far away from this stage in my life, some advice to remember before I say "I do."
Love isn’t enough. Marry the person who brings out your best and will stand beside you at your worst.
    2. Recovering the Classics - Confession: I totally judge books by their covers. Colors and titles must be eye-catching for me to even pick it up. Whenever I'm in a bookstore, I love looking at the new covers of classic books. These are basically all of that in one place + a note-to-self to read more classics. My favorites from the list were Persuasion, Pride and Prejudice, The Call of the Wild!!

    4. This semester I have work at 8:30 in the morning thrice a week. My tendency to underestimate the time it takes for me to wake up, get dressed, and eat breakfast in the morning --> me stressing out. Amanda's overnight oatmeal smoothies are lifesavers for when I'm in a rush. So good I made it twice in less than a week. I tried the apple one and the chocolate one and they were both amazing, make-ahead breakfasts and perfect for this crazy 70 degree swinter.

    5. We spend 3 months of our lives doing laundry, 51 days contemplating what to wear, and 4 weeks wondering if we could do be doing something better. I used to (and still maybe kinda sometimes do) struggle with empty gaps in my day and being "bored." When I didn't have something to do, I felt unproductive and anxious. YOLO mindset built into my generation got to me; I was terrified of wasting time, money, calories, even my own happiness. How crazy is that?!! I came across this mind-blowing 5 minute video called Sum this week. It challenges you to reexamine how you spend your time and appreciate those seemingly banal moments in life. Accept life for what it is--boredom and all.

    Enjoy your weekend!

    Questions:
Do you judge a book by its cover before buying?
Have you tried making overnight oatmeal smoothies? / What's your go-to quick easy grab and go breakfast?
    What's your view on boredom?
